Magnolia officinalis (commonly called Houpu Magnolia or Magnolia-bark) is a species of Magnolia native to the mountains and valleys of China at altitudes of 300-1500 m.

The bark is stripped from the stems, branches, and roots and used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is known as houpu (thus the common names). This bark is highly aromatic and contains magnolol and honokiol, two polyphenolic compounds that have demonstrated both anti-anxiety and anti-angiogenic properties. It has also been shown to reduce allergic and asthmatic reactions. Today, the bulk of bark used for commercial and domestic use is supplied by plants in cultivation.

Magnolia extract has a strong antimicrobial, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. Used in acne treatment.

Magnolia Extract is very effective against acne-causing germs without irritating the skin. As it has a much higher antioxidant effect than alpha-tocopherol, it is perfect for sun protection products. Oxidation products are neutralised and resulting skin damage is prevented.
Magnolia Bark Extract has a very good effect against bacteria, yeasts and fungi even at very low dosages. It works particularly well in combination with Pentylene Glycol natural and Glyceryl Caprylate (GMCY).
Magnolia Bark Extract is hydroscopic and should be protected against moisture.
