Lycopene is a bright red carotene and carotenoid pigment found in tomatoes and other red fruits.

It is a member of the beta carotene family and a phytonutrient which gives tomatoes their bright red color.

It is a powerful anti-oxidant which helps fight and protect against free radical damage. By neutralizing free-radicals, lycopene has the ability to promote cardiovascular and prostate health, as well as support healthy cholesterol levels and overall immune function. Human body cannot produce lycopene and hence it must be obtained through diet.

One of the biggest benefits of lycopene is that it is an antioxidant and protects the body from free radical stress that can damage DNA and other cell structures.

The antioxidant properties help balance free radical activity in the body4 and, in doing so, may reduce the risk of certain diseases. For example, there’s emerging evidence that lycopene has a role in supporting the health of your bones.5

While there may be additional benefits of lycopene related to heart health and cancer prevention, there’s not enough evidence to support these benefits at this time.
